The Research

 

The research focused on cyber-bullying, and kid's on-line behaviors is relatively new, but there is current research that is extremely important for adults to be aware of.

 

Kid's On-line Behavior:

 

Ø      82% of younger teens (12 to 14) go online; 92% of older teens (15 to 17) do.

 

Ø      26% of teens who go online from home do so in their bedrooms.

 

Ø       75% of online teens, and 65% of all teens (16 million) use IM.

 

Ø      33% use e-mail, instant messaging (IMing), and chat rooms as the main way they keep in contact with their friends.

 

Ø      60% of 6th graders go online at home.

 

Ø      87% of teens go online at home, and 74% of teens go online from a friend's house.

 

Ø      26% of teens who go online from home do so from the privacy of their bedrooms.

 

Ø      48% of IM using teens use it every day.

 

Ø      24% use IM 1 to 2 hours per day.

 

Ø      56% of IM-using teens have posted a profile, including name and other identifying information, where others can see it.

 

Ø      28% of IM-using teens have posted their phone numbers.

 

Ø      75% of middle-school students have visited a website bashing.

 

Ø      40% had their password stolen and changed by someone (locking them out of their own account) or sent communications posing as them.

 

Ø      Only 15% of parents polled by the Pew Institute knew what cyber-buIlying was.
